Chelsea Handler: First Female MTV VMA Host Since 1994 Sets Bar Low
We were excited to see that MTV finally allowed a woman to host the VMAs again after 16 long years when we tuned in to the MTV VMA 2010 award show last night, but our excitement didn’t last long. Why? Because the host was Chelsea Handler, a female comedian who admits that her technique consists of “comments that aren’t actually funny.” We at Bloginity could not agree more.
And thanks to her unfunny performance, we can say that Chelsea Handler was not only the first female VMA host in a long time, but the worst female VMA host of all time, and it is likely to stay that way. Handler’s best moments were when she was running off the stage, and we now understand why Kid Rock gives her the finger in the MTV VMA video promo below.
Handler also managed to toss in some offensive jokes, such as noting that she had recently decided against getting a ride home with T.I. That’s a bit awkward, considering that T.I. was just arrested while still on probation from a previous jail stint, and many of T.I.’s peers were in attendance – not a laughing matter.
In addition, Handler attempted to get some cheap laughs with a domestic violence joke: “That series of duets released by that Russian woman featuring Mel Gibson…those were cute.” Not only was that potentially offensive, it wasn’t funny. Like all of Chelsea Handler‘s “jokes.”
Whether Chelsea Handler is capable of being funny is debatable. Whether she was funny at last night’s MTV VMA 2010 show is not…she bombed. Perhaps the New York Times said it best:
“She never looked comfortable, undone by nerves, brittle material, and the wattage of those around her…[Handler was] purposefully out-of-touch, with brief, alarming flashes of off-color racial humor.”
That sums it up pretty well. Who do you think could have made a better host? We can think of quite a few…
