As if Miley Cyrus wasn’t enough of an example of how it pays to have famous parents, 9-year-old Willow Smith, the daughter of Will and Jada Smith, has just signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and has released her first single, “Whip My Hair.”
The official video for “Whip My Hair” will be shot later this month. According to Will and Jada, they found Roc Nation to be a good home for Willow Smith because of the label’s passion and integrity.
“After meeting with several record companies, it was clear that Jay-Z, Ty Ty, Jay Brown and the Roc Nation staff was the unquestionable choice,” explained Will and Jada. “Their passion for Willow combined with their boundless vision and artistic integrity made Roc Nation the perfect home for our little girl.”
The superior production skills of Roc Nation likely played a part as well, as “Whip My Hair” features a wall of sound in the form of tight percussion, background singers and other instrumentation.
The catchy track is an obvious choice as a single, although it’s a bit odd to hear a 9-year-old singing about “haters” and dropping innuendo such as “I whip it real good.” At times, you might think you’re listening to Rihanna. And perhaps that’s why Jay-Z was so excited to have Willow aboard.
“We at Roc Nation are excited to work with Willow,” said Jay-Z. “She has an energy and enthusiasm about her music that is truly infectious.”
According to Jay-Z, Willow Smith is one-of-a-kind, thanks to her display of obvious talent at her age.
“It’s rare to find an artist with such innate talent and creativity at such a young age,” explained Jay-Z. “Willow is about to embark on an incredible journey and we look forward to joining her as she grows in all aspects of her career.”
