Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011: Were Jokes Funny or Rude?

Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes 2011 ceremony, and the performance left some viewers talking more about Ricky Gervais than the winners of any awards.  Why?  Simple – Ricky GervaisGolden Globes 2011 hosting performance offered plenty of rude remarks, insulting many Hollywood stars and the organizers of the Golden Globes 2011 show.  But was Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes 2011 performance so bad? You decide.

Ricky Gervais pulled no punches, with remarks such as the film I Love You Phillip Morris being about “two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then.”

In addition, Ricky Gervais got pretty personal with Robert Downey, Jr., introducing him as such: “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail…”

Meanwhile, Gervais’ Golden Globes 2011 gig also dissed Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp of The Tourist: “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumour going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”

This was shocking considering that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which chooses the Golden Globe winners, is in the middle of a lawsuit alleging that its members accepted gifts in exchange for support.

Gervais also went after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s president, Philip Berk, saying, “I had to help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in.”

At least one star made a remark about Ricky Gervais Golden Globes performance being inappropriate.  Downey, Jr., was the most vocal, saying, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the show’s going pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”

Ricky Gervais disappeared for about an hour during the Golden Globes 2011 show, leading some to think he had been fired mid-show, but he did return and toned it down a bit. Still, the damage had been done, with remarks such as “It’s gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie [Sheen] calls it: breakfast” and calling Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher’s dad.”

I thought he was hilarious as usual. Can we can back to some real news? The hype surrounding all of this is what I find distasteful. Oh my gosh, a comedian told a joke! Call 911! Some people were offended! Its the end of the world. I concur with Mica and bdawg.

I thought the jokes were great! So funny! Whoever didn’t like it can’t take a joke! You gotta be able to laugh at yourself (and others) in life! How else can you make it through???

i have to agree that Ricky’s jokes were indeed mean. But I have to admit that I did laughed at some of em.

He was not rude in the slightest. He was actually quite courageous to throw punches like that at the most self-congratulatory celebrities. The Golden Globes are a joke, the HFPA is a corrupt organization and Gervais actually made the show somewhat entertaining. Do you really want a culture that continues this celeb-worship as if all of those individuals are good people? Apparently the commenters here do.

He was rude and a disgusting host. His arrogance was not appreciated. He should have been fired for this performance.

Ricky was very rude and distasteful on the Golden Globes. He is arrogant and hurtful. His last comment about being an athiest was also unnecessary and for that comment he may just get exactly what he deserves long term. I do not care to ever see him host or perform again anywhere.
