Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes 2011 ceremony, and the performance left some viewers talking more about Ricky Gervais than the winners of any awards. Why? Simple – Ricky Gervais‘ Golden Globes 2011 hosting performance offered plenty of rude remarks, insulting many Hollywood stars and the organizers of the Golden Globes 2011 show. But was Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes 2011 performance so bad? You decide.
Ricky Gervais pulled no punches, with remarks such as the film I Love You Phillip Morris being about “two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then.”
In addition, Ricky Gervais got pretty personal with Robert Downey, Jr., introducing him as such: “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail…”
Meanwhile, Gervais’ Golden Globes 2011 gig also dissed Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp of The Tourist: “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumour going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”
This was shocking considering that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which chooses the Golden Globe winners, is in the middle of a lawsuit alleging that its members accepted gifts in exchange for support.
Gervais also went after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s president, Philip Berk, saying, “I had to help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in.”
At least one star made a remark about Ricky Gervais Golden Globes performance being inappropriate. Downey, Jr., was the most vocal, saying, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the show’s going pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”
Ricky Gervais disappeared for about an hour during the Golden Globes 2011 show, leading some to think he had been fired mid-show, but he did return and toned it down a bit. Still, the damage had been done, with remarks such as “It’s gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie [Sheen] calls it: breakfast” and calling Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher’s dad.”
