While Black Swan has been a bit hit at the box office, not everyone is head over heels for Natalie Portman’s performance as a ballerina. Sarah Lane, who was the body double for Natalie Portman in Black Swan, has slammed Portman’s dancing skills, saying very few dancing scenes actually featured Portman.
“Of the full body shots, I would say five percent are Natalie,” Sarah Lane said. “She can’t move her body; she’s very stiff.”
However, Black Swan choreographer and Portman fiance Benjamin Millepied has claimed that Lane’s suggestions aren’t accurate and that the vast majority of the dancing in the film was performed by Portman.
“There are articles now talking about her dance double that are making it sound like [Lane] did a lot of the work,” said Millepied. “Honestly, 85 percent of that movie is Natalie.”
Because both sides have obvious stakes in the argument, it seems that the matter of Sarah Lane vs. Natalie Portman in Black Swan will come down to a he said, she said battle, like so many other issues in Hollywood. While Lane obviously has high standards from being a professional dancer, she has suggested that Portman is quite incompetent.
“From a professional dancer’s standpoint, she doesn’t look like a professional ballet dancer at all,” Lane said of Portman. “And she can’t dance in pointe shoes.”
