Ever thought about carving through a book? Brian has. But how does one discover such talent? Brian Dettmer, aka “The Book Surgeon” uses surgical tools to carve each page at a time creating a full proper carved artwork. When you come to think about the core idea it’s a pretty clever one. You will find carved wood sculptures, but not trees, turned into books, then into carved sculptures.

Chicago based artist Dettmer manipulates the pages and shapes for his sculpture by folding, bending, and rolling as well as stacking multiple books together to create the shape of an original form. He says, My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the complete pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly when they have been since their original conception,”
