Ever thought about making a sculpture? How about carving through a book? How does one discover such talent? Brian Dettmer, also known as “The Book Surgeon” uses surgical tools to carve each page at a time creating a full proper carved artwork. When you come to think about the core idea it’s clever one. You will find carved wood sculptures, but not trees, turned into books, back into carved sculptures.
Brian Dettmer is a Chicago based artist. He manipulates the pages and shapes for his sculpture by folding, bending, and rolling as well as stacking multiple books together to create the shape of an original form.
“My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the complete pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly when they have been since their original conception,”
