M-Bone, the rapper who most recently created a dance sensation with “Teach Me How to Dougie,” was killed in a drive-by shooting in Inglewood, California, last night. M-Bone – real name Montae Talbert – was 22 and part of the rap collective known as Cali Swag District. M-Bone was reportedly sitting by himself in his car around 10:30 p.m. Sunday when another vehicle pulled up alongside his and fired.
According to Cali Swag District publicist Greg Miller, the incident, which occurred outside of an Inglewood liquor store, was a “random act of violence.”
“He was a hardworking, passionate artist and dancer that will be deeply missed,” said Miller in a statement.
M-Bone was shot twice in the head and died in the hospital. In the wake of M-Bone’s tragic death, fellow rappers took to Twitter to pay tribute.
“RIP to the homie M-bone from Cali Swag; your family is in my prayers,” posted Twista. “You got the whole world doing a dance — that’s what you call a legacy.”
Indeed, the Dougie was a widespread phenomenon, as Cali Swag District was invited to perform it on several television shows, while first lady Michelle Obama performed the dance when promoting her “Let’s Move” initiative to battle childhood obesity.
