It is no exaggeration to say that the world’s most celebrated fashion show is that of Victoria’s Secret. It’s impressive how many models hold this gig as their ultimate objective in the business, and for those that have walked it, the crown jewel of their career.
Last night’s show, held at the Lexington Armory in New York City cost a reported $12 million to produce. Whether Miranda Kerr’s eagerly anticipated $2.5 million Fantasy Bra, sporting 3400 precious gems and 500 hours of hand-work, figures into that tally, we’re not totally sure, but chances are it doesn’t. With six themes, 38 models and 69 total looks, this was slated to be the biggest and best Victoria’s Secret show to do date, but that was not the case. The superhero theme was a total hit, with Anja Rubik and Adriana Lima’s comic book onomatopoeia capes being two of the real bonafide show-stoppers in the line-up, but some other looks – like Chanel Iman’s teeny-bopper ensemble that bordered on Avril Lavigne for Hot Topic, was a real miss.
Victoria’s Secret veterans – Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel, Chanel Iman, Doutzen Kroes, Erin Heatherton, Lily Aldridge, Lindsay Ellington, Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – were joined by a couple of newcomers, like runway veterans Constance Jablonski (who looked precious in her paysanne ruffles), Bregje Heinen (who has been on a sort of modeling hiatus for the past year – a welcome surprise, nonetheless), Joan Smalls (it was bound to happen for the rising-star, especially after donning that black macrame two-piece bikini for Emilio Pucci for spring 2011 ready-to-wear) and most notably Karlie Kloss, whose runway walk is what fashion dreams are made of.
Nicki Minaj, who performed two nights ago at Versace for H&M’s enormous bash two days ago, made another musical appearance here, as did Jay-Z and Kanye West, who was already sporting his new Versace + H&M palm-print jacket and Maroon 5, whose front-man Adam Levine serenaded his model-girlfriend Anne Vyalitsina on the runway.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air on CBS on Tuesday, November 29th (10-11PM EST).
