Squeals. Gasps. OMGs dropped left and right. Joseph Altuzarra’s latest collection sent me into a frenzy – I’m still in raptures. With a slight Victorian hand on the tailoring of those oh-so-special blazers, a saturation of embellished medallions worthy of the Maharajah and the young brand’s most celebrated signature – a dizzying array of must-have outerwear, the precocious French designer is riding a high wave. This here is proof positive that the CFDA/VFF win a couple of months ago was no fluke.
There is a caveat. The similarities between this Fall/Winter 2012 lineup and Balenciaga’s own celebrated F/W 07 outing (one of the most revered collections of all time, justifiably) are rather severe. Altuzarra’s dip into LBD territory also recalls Nicolas Ghesquiere’s little black dress opening numbers for F/W 08. He has riffed on Balenciaga before, but you know what, it doesn’t really matter. It’s just a simple observation, not a judgment. Altuzarra put his own stamp on things and what he has made is worthy of all the praise that is surely coming its way.
