Donatella Versace: Line is glamorous and tough
Donatella Versace’s couture collection is for a “glamorous warrior woman”.
The designer showed her fashion house’s first couture line in years recently, after deciding the time was right to return to glamor.
She had a set aesthetic in mind when designing the pieces and wanted the collection to look tough.
“I had in my mind a glamorous warrior woman. She wears sculpted, body-conscious designs that have a bold, futuristic look. I imagined these gowns to be like sexy body-armor, something a modern woman can wear to dazzle and impress,” she explained.
It was the first time the line had been seen in Paris since 2004 and the collection went down a storm with critics.
“The design process was very architectural too. I constructed the dresses to incorporate strips of gold-plated metal, laser-cut embroidery and lots of crystals and sequins,” Donatella explained to mrblasberg.com.
Donatella went on to discuss her favorite Versace pieces.
Jennifer Lopez hit headlines when she wore a green dress by the fashion house to the Grammy Awards in 2000. It was split to the naval and showed much of her chest and it remains a design Donatella loves.
“It was an astonishing feat of fabric engineering – a flimsy thing made from just a few pieces of printed fabric,” she said. “It was very, very sexy, and provoked a crazy reaction. Jennifer is of course a very sexy woman, but I think the Jungle Dress had special impact because it showed that she was really proud of her sensuality.”
