Proenza Schouler Spring 2012

As we’re heading further into the summer season, the traditional elements of the safari trend have been given a makeover for a fresh and modern feel.

Leopard and zebra patterns now come in all kinds of cuts, colors and materials including leather jackets, brightly hued hosiery and patent clutches.

Safari-inspired garments have been reworked in luxe materials to make you fit for survival in the city jungle; and traditional Africana patterns are clashed against each other for a daring urban warrior effect.

In fact, designers all over the globe went wild for all things safari during the Spring/Summer 12 shows, so your zebra stripes will earn you some sartorial ones internationally.

Proenza Schouler convinced with ladylike animal print creations, while Balenciaga worked spots and stripes with a splash of color.

Hervé Léger embraced the crafty side of the trend with fringed confections and earthy tones, while arty beading and crochet knits championed the Africana trend from New York to Milan.

How can you tame the trend to suit your wardrobe?

Flirty and flowing animal print dresses are perfect for summer parties or indeed the vacation season, and once you have a tan in place – natural or from the bottle – start by experimenting with different colors.

In the workplace, why not team a smart leopard print blazer with a soft jersey tank, skinny jeans or city shorts and heels?

Safari-cut jackets and shorts look great with a crisp white shirt or tangerine top respectively, so don’t be afraid to mix it up.

If you are brave enough to clash prints, keep silhouettes simple and team your ensemble with a pair of dark, high-heeled leather sandals to embrace your inner glamazon.

For accessories, think tan leather belts, raffia wedges and feather earrings. Beaded necklaces or bracelets also work perfectly.
