Summer fashion is often associated with floaty dresses, crop tops and plenty of skin on display. But one of this season’s hottest trends is more about smart silhouettes than flirty frocks, giving our vacation attire a new sleek edge.

Fashion has fallen in love with the pairing of smart blazers and shorts and the best thing about this trend is that its variations are endless.

Whether you want to go all-out-fancy in a tailored blazer, city shorts and high-heeled sandals, or opt for a more casual approach in a cotton jacket, denim shorts and ballerina flats, this look has thousands of stylish nuances.

On the Spring/Summer 12 catwalks at New York Fashion Week, the blazer and shorts combination was spotted at Ralph Lauren, Temperley London and Doo.Ri.

Ralph Lauren showed a super sleek city look with combinations in white pinstriped material and a pale grey ensemble complete with waistcoat and tie.

Temperley London took an uber-feminine approach and sent models down the runway in skimpy black silk shorts teamed with shiny crop-sleeve blazers and a floral top.

Doo.Ri opted for a sportier version with lose-fitting grey shorts, a casual white T-shirt and a long, soft blazer.

If the sleek work-meets-vacation look isn’t for you, there are more casual versions of the trend to try out.

Why not make like Kate Moss and team a smart black blazer with distressed denim shorts?

Or follow in the footsteps of Californian fashionista Whitney Port and opt for a pastel colored jacket made from a soft cotton material.

With designs ranging from summery brights to stripes, blazers with floral lining and made from denim, the opportunities to rock this hot look is going to keep you cool this summer.
