The 81-year-old star was a style icon and muse of Karl Lagerfeld. She passed away in Milan yesterday and many people involved with the industry have offered their condolences.
Anna was often featured in the pages of Italian Vogue and the publication’s editor Franca Sozzani was quick to pay tribute to her.
“23 years of working together, thousands of D.P. Doppie Pagine – double-page spreads realized together. You will always be remembered Anna (sic),” she wrote on Twitter.
Stefano Gabbana also used the social networking site to speak about the fashion star, as did fellow muse Anna Dello Russo.
“RIP Anna Piaggi… :((((( ciao grande Anna!!! (sic),” she wrote.
Burlesque star Dita Von Teese was one of the first to tweet about Anna’s passing. She was devastated to learn what had happened, explaining she also looked up to Anna because of her flamboyant style.
“So sad to hear that Anna Piaggi, one of my last icons of beauty & fashion has passed. She was the height of glamorous eccentricity (sic),” she wrote.
In 2006, a museum in London offered a look at Anna’s closet, showcasing 2,856 dresses and 256 pairs of shoes.
Her love of clothes and one-of-a-kind style made her a favorite with designers including Marc Jacobs and Domenico Dolce, as well as footwear star Manolo Blahnik and milliner Stephen Jones.
