Comme des Garçcons founder Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market will be crossing the pond to New York City to scoop up brands like Alexander McQueen, Erdem, and Saint Laurent in December 2013. The 20,000-square-foot New York branch will be located at Lexington Ave and 30th Street (a seemingly risky location for what’s to be a mega retailer) and will be the third in the world, following the 2004 flagship store in the Mayfair district of London and the Tokyo store that opened in March 2012.
With the opening of the seven floor store, vibrant window designs, designer collaborations, and the arrival of a new shopping district will hopefully follow suit and define the spot. The London store revamped Mayfair, bringing designer shops like Acne and Paul Smith to the neighborhood. One can only dream that the restaurants, residences, and nail salons of Murray Hill will get some similar designer company alongside the reportedly imposing classically-designed building.
