More and more Western stores are popping up in Asia, confirming its place as a dominating fashion hotspot. French designer Isabel Marant recently opened a store in the Gangnam district in Seoul and plans to open one in Shanghai soon. Last week, Topshop announced its plans to move into Hong Kong in 2013, and Acme creative director, Jonny Johansson, threw a party to celebrate Acme’s new flagship store in Tokyo.
And if the on slew of new stores isn’t enough proof of the fashion super prowess of Asia, now designers select Asia as the spot to make big announcements and celebrate major achievements. Take Rag & Bone, who threw a fete to mark the line’s new handbags, in Tokyo last year.
The question for many other designers is no longer what market to move into next, it’s when will the move to the East take place.
