Beating out four other finalists, Nicholas Kirkwood went home the winner of the 2013 BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund. Selected by a committee of fashion insiders, Kirkwood received £200,000 as well as mentoring from some of Britain’s top business leaders in the industry.
The fund has been in existence for four years, and Kirkwood is the first non-clothes designer to win the award. Designers Roksanda Ilinic, Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, and Emilia Wickstead left empty handed but shouldn’t be too discouraged as Kirkwood had been a finalist twice before.
Kirkwood opted to showcase his shoes on the heads of models, rather than on plinths, to create a show that could–and obviously did–rival his competitors. This type of creativity demonstrates why Kirkwood was selected as the winner. His business sense doesn’t hurt either. He has a store in London and one in New York and recently announced a menswear line as well as having collaborated with Erdem, Rodarte, and fellow finalist Pilotto.
