Online auction house Paddle8’s Somebody sale of contemporary art and photography, opening March 13 at Paddle8.com, will offer a selection of approximately 40 works by and about celebrated figures in the worlds of art and popular culture, including unique works of fine art, editions and photographic works.
The sale is hosted with Interview magazine, founded by the most prominent art-world figure to explore the many facets of celebrity in both his work and life, Andy Warhol.
On the occasion of the auction, artist Richard Phillips, whose work often takes iconic celebrity figures as ostensible subject matter, has collaborated on a video project with Paddle8 and Milk Studios’ LEGS Productions. Phillips discussed mass media’s depiction of celebrity, as well as the influence of Richard Bernstein’s legendary cover art for Interview magazine in the 1980s. A complete edition of Phillips’ Most Wanted series, the originals of which debuted at White Cube in London in 2011, will comprise one of the lots in the auction.
Other highlights of the sale include works by Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Prince, Dan Colen, Wade Guyton, Nate Lowman, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, Gary Hume and David LaChapelle.
Somebody follows the success of Paddle8’s first three themed auctions, averaging over 75% of lots sold. Paddle8’s new auction model allows collectors to consign works remotely, with low commissions and no public sales records.
