Rufus Wainwright returns to the pop foray with his eagerly anticipated new album, Out of the Game , to be released May 1st on Decca.

Rufus Wainwright returns to the pop foray with his eagerly anticipated new album, Out of the Game , to be released May 1st on Decca. Produced by the celebrated Mark Ronson , this is the seventh studio album from one of the most accomplished, contemporary singer-songwriters today.

A labor of love for both Wainwright and Ronson, Rufus calls Out of the Game, “the most pop album I’ve ever made,” while Ronson recently stated, “it’s the best work of my career.” Recorded in New York in the fall of 2011, the twelve songs are hook-laden, memorably arranged tracks reminiscent of Rufus’ early work, following 2010′s more quietly intimate outing, Songs For Lulu.

From the uptempo opening chords of the title track and first single, to the gospel tinged rock of ‘Jericho,’ through the beauty of ‘Sometimes You Need’ and the emotional pull of ‘Candles,’ this new disc ranks alongside Rufus Wainwright’s very best.

Musicians on the album include the Dap-Kings who Mark used for the groundbreaking Amy Winehouse Back To Black album and his own ‘Record Collection’; Wilco’s Nels Cline; Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Andrew Wyatt from Miike Snow; Sean Lennon and Martha Wainwright.

Influences, as ever, were all encompassing. Mark says Out of the Game “has a real 70′s, Laurel Canyon spirit” while Rufus cites “all the greats- Elton, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie – basically the brash and beautiful. It’s also very Rufus.”

Affectionately referred to by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” and praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Grammy nominee Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. He is the son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and brother of Martha Wainwright, but Rufus has achieved his success by carving out his own singular sound in the worlds of rock, opera, theater, dance and film.

A fragrance bottle is not just a bottle, it is a piece of art. Something to be respected and treated delicately. It is the first and only most visual impression in a scent-directed industry.

A fragrance bottle is not just a bottle, it is a piece of art. Something to be respected and treated delicately. It is the first and most visual impression in a scent-directed industry. Fragrance is an art, not only in combining the perfect notes to meet your sensory utopia, but also in the beauty in which it is presented.

Step in Marc Rosen. Mr. Rosen is an icon in the fragrance world. He is an internationally known and idolized bottle designer and seven time FiFi winner. His book Glamour Icons: Perfume Bottle Design is a stunning and stimulating book of Rosen’s own bottle designs, as well as the iconic bottles in the history of perfumery. Glamour Icons is a deep history of a world fragrant with glamour, celebrities, and brilliant icons explaining how these pieces of art came about. From Karl Lagerfeld to Elizabeth Arden, Chanel, and Tiffany, these are only some of the many pieces of art that you will learn about.

I found this book superbly fascinating and honestly could not put it down. It brought me into a world I had not yet encountered with very close up and personal stories about many of my personal beauty icons. This is truly a book not to be missed and I will certainly never look at another fragrance bottle the same way. I always admired the beauty of certain bottles, but now to know the passion, art, design and true talent put into each bottle, brings a new and beautiful admiration to an art that I already so admired.

Look out for Lana Del Rey's upcoming album "Born To Die," an eerie look into life's dark truths. Releases tomorrow in the US.

Lana Del Rey isn’t necessarily a happy person, but you have to give the girl credit for being so blunt and ballsy about it. On the track “Off to the Races” from her upcoming album, Born To Die, out, Del Rey sings of a partner who “knows every inch of my tar black soul.” To be as straightforward as the singer’s lyrics, the tracks released so far from her album Born To Die are cryptic. But whatever torments Lana Del Rey, she is able to harness the pain into music that is melodic, poetic, and melancholy.

The singles released as of yet offer a great deal of promise for the album’s entirety; each lyric uncovers a veil into Lana’s mind and each video demonstrates a sad metaphor for her thoughts. The track “Born to Die,” whose video was released last month, takes an eerie perspective on the grim truths of life. The message may be somber, but the music is excellent.

The album is now available on iTunes right here.

(PRESS RELEASE) – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has produced its trailer for the 84th Academy Awards in conjunction with Funny Or Die. The trailer features host Billy Crystal and celebrity cameo appearances by Robin Williams, Josh Duhamel, Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Vinnie Jones.

“We wanted to try something a little bit different this year instead of a traditional, clip-based piece,” said Academy Chief Marketing Officer Christina Kounelias. “The trailer has a fun twist that conveys how excited everyone is to have Billy back.”

Crystal has one of the most distinguished track records of any host in Oscar® history. His upcoming appearance will mark his ninth turn hosting the Academy Awards. The enthusiastic response to the announcement of his return was the inspiration for the trailer.

“Our team had a great time working with the Academy and joining forces with Billy again,” said Mike Farah, Funny Or Die’s president of production. “We think the trailer really speaks to the excitement around this year’s Oscars®, and Funny Or Die was honored to be a part of it.”

The trailer will have a one-month run in more than 2,000 theaters beginning January 6 and can be viewed online at Oscars.org/trailer.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) – Metallica has announced that is “has decided to go old school” and will release its current digital EP, Beyond Magnetic, on CD worldwide at retail on January 30th and on January 31st in North America. The EP, released via all digital retailers on December 13th, features four tracks recorded during the sessions for 2008′s 2x-platinum Death Magnetic, the band’s fifth consecutive No. 1 album.

Said the members of Metallica of Beyond Magnetic: “During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you’ve all come to know over the last three years. Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on ‘Mission Metallica’ (remember ‘Mission Metallica’?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, ‘What ever happened to those other four songs???.’ We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them for our 30th anniversary celebration last month, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March ’08. These four songs were released as gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they’re being made available to you.”

Metallica celebrated its 30th anniversary as a band last month, performing four shows at the Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco, CA, exclusively for members of their fan club, the Metallica Club.

Sometimes stars emerge. Sometimes stars are thrust upon us. And sometimes stars simply slip into the atmosphere as if propelled by something otherworldly.

Sometimes stars emerge. Sometimes stars are thrust upon us. And sometimes stars simply slip into the atmosphere as if propelled by something otherworldly. It is into this last category that the astonishing presence, voice, look and feel of Lana Del Rey falls. Musical stardom is not an option with Ms. Del Rey. It is her vocation. She calls herself the ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ and defines her genre as ‘Hollywood pop/sadcore’, a dramatic new loop for pop music. Her look she describes as ‘Lolita got lost in the ‘hood’. Get used to it all. This isn’t just soundbite, it’s Lana’s reality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bag1gUxuU0g

If Bloginity would to predict Lana’s future, it would be that this talent would become (shortly) the next Amy Winehouse/Adele and the world needs to realize that. Lana del Rey is spreading like wildfire. With the current buzz that she is picking along the way from bloggers (like us) Lana will become a household name by early 2012 and that’s nothing to even question. Just take a few minutes to listen to her angelic voice and you will immediately understand why.

Lana opened her musical hand at an open mic night in the hipster New York suburb of Williamsburg. She was 19 years old and terrified. ‘The first open mic was shocking to me. I was wearing jeans and a yellow shirt. It was at the Lilo Lounge. No-one was playing New York anymore then. I had my acoustic guitar. Everybody stopped. It was fucking embarrassing,I couldn’t believe it. It was a rock bar. I didn’t belong there. I sang a ballad, sort of exactly like Video Games that I had written with three chords. The whole room stopped fighting and just went silent. They didn’t even clap at the end. It stayed quiet. I said ‘thank you’, left my jacket at the bar stool and just ran out of the place. It was an interesting dynamic. I thought if I could just stop people, then that might be enough.’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO1OV5B_JDw

Clearly something special was happening. The interlocking sounds of her mesmerizing, hushed voice and the bruised luxury of her music alerted ears; immediately people expressed interest. ‘Somebody ran out after me and said “you should come to a night I’m doing next week and play some songs for me.” I was afraid of everything. If they had laughed at me that night I would have never come back on stage. Ever.’

Her direct influences were visual as well as musical; David Lynch, soundtracks for ‘50s black and white movies, the whirring sound of the Ferris at Coney Island, fame itself. She lived in a New Jersey trailer park and decked her homestead in flags, streamers and seasonally inappropriate Christmas lights. ‘All the things I love,’she notes. This was Lana’s world now and it needed to sparkle.

After scrapes in and out of the music industry, holding onto the fastidious dreams of the possibilities for Lana Del Rey, a breathtaking musical landscape has emerged. Brittle, emotional, cascading with cinematic reference points, her songwriting was starting to turn technicolor. The tainted glamour of Video Games, with its lyrical leanings towards the verbal loquacity of hip hop and its noir-ish melodic feeling for torch singing, was a beginning for her.

“I had found a sound that thrilled and intrigued me. Shockingly enough, Video Games was a key moment for me. I was chasing hits, fast songs. I would be wondering ‘how am I going to pole-dance in the spotlight to this, then?’ I put up Video Games for myself. It was slow, it was a ballad, it kind of had no chorus. I put it up on Youtube and it worked. Every day there were thousands more views. I just sat there wondering where these people were coming from. I had no idea how they’d heard it but people came and started talking to me because of that song. It was not what I expected. But what a relief. If I could have a shot at singing my Hollywood glam ballads as well as my more upbeat gangsta brother versions of those songs, that would be great. Just not having to try and sing like other people.”

Clearly this was the music of someone who had given herself over and hurt in love, that understood the exquisite, beautiful pain of heartbreak. ‘There’s something beautiful about the fight. About any fight. And I feel the pain of life.’ All the better for sharing it with an audience. ‘I’m talking about epic, knocked‐down, dragged‐out love stories in song. That’s what I’m heading towards. I want to destroy lives with my music and to understand the glamour of danger. Without Scarface would there be half the gangsters there are out there now? Odd Future, Lil Wayne, Simon Cowell. You cannot take your eyes off these people’s stories, however twisted they become with power. There is a whole new genre that nobody is observing. The American Dream and American Psycho are starting to represent the same thing. Cinema and music and life are starting to merge Death is art. We’ve played pop music out. That wholesome dream is dead.’

Strong words. But at 24 years old Lana has faced the fear and clocked up strong experiences to back up her magical musical storytelling

“I don’t fall in love easily. I’m so particular. But at the same time I do fall in love maybe stupidly. High impact love. I can tell everything I need to know in about one minute. It doesn’t always mean it’s going to end good but it definitely strikes me right away. I want to find someone who’s really magnetic but who isn’t going to do anything bad to me. It’s hard.”

All of these intimacies will coalesce on the debut Lana Del Rey album pencilled tentatively for early 2012. Complementing the lush orchestration of Video Games, there is a mountain of music that she has crafted lovingly in the studio since first facing her fear. From the gorgeous timbres of Hey Lolita Hey to the hip hop influenced National Anthem, Lana Del Rey’s music sounds unique like it has arrived bespoke to the artist.

She intends to work with hip‐hop heavyweights, with the future–perfect foot soldiers at the coal face of exciting pop.

“I know it is going to take a lot of work to get there. But that’s OK when you have people around you who believe in you. The record is going to be gorgeous. That much we know. Whether or not it will work? That much we don’t know.”

As for the inevitable stardom that will come her way? That is something Lana Del Rey does not fear.

“I know a lot of different people. When they are drunk, in the dark of the night they all want the same thing. They all want to be famous. It’s innately human to want other people to bear witness to your life. It’s important for people to be watched. They don’t want to be alone. I don’t want to be alone.”

While Placebo is in between touring, their amazing drummer Steve Forrest initiated a new project. He never thought his side project would garner as much interest as it has, but talented people always intrigue. Touring the UK with his band Planes, promoting a new EP, Steve stops by and offers a few insights into his life both on and off the road.

Julija: Whose idea was to start Planes? How did it come about?

Steve: Planes started really years ago with just me writing and performing acoustic songs in various pubs and parties for fun, mostly. I never thought my songs would be something that people actually wanted to hear. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I decided to take it up a notch and find band members and get this thing off of the ground, and here we are!

Julija: What’s the story behind the title of the band?

Steve: It‘s just a name Ted (other member of a band) came up with. He wanted “Plains”, but I thought “Planes” looked better spelled out.

Julija: Do you do gigs these days? How often?

Steve: With Planes, we are currently gigging all around the UK promoting our new EP with hopes of getting to Europe sometime next year.

Julija: What would you be doing now if you hadn’t become a musician and made it in the music industry?

Steve: I can’t imagine what I would be doing, I suppose I’d be a tattoo artist in my home town. I’d like to think I would have still moved away from my home town in search of better opportunity.

Julija: What’s your favorite pastime?

Steve: My favorite past time I’d have to say would be spending unforgettable evenings with my closest friends.

Julija: What do you dislike about being well known?
