Lady Gaga “hyperventilated” when she was forced to go make-up free for her ‘Alejandro’ video.

The eccentric singer admitted she clashed with director and photographer Steven Klein over his vision to see the star minus her famous cosmetics and blonde locks, but in the end she was glad he forced her to be herself.

She told Japan’s Vogue Hommes magazine: “We are both very strong-willed and we both have very specific visions. And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together. And then we tied a beautiful knot! I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone and he wanted to bring me out of mine.

“He was stripping me down, taking off all my make-up, no eyelashes, no liner, saying, ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned … For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.”

The ‘Telephone’ singer – who is famed for her kooky fashion sense – recently revealed she thinks stars owe it to their fans to look good on the red carpet.

She said: “I think you should look nice all the time. When I meet celebrities and they’re in casual clothes, I’m always like, ‘Whaaat?’ I don’t mean to be judgmental, but it would do them better to be who they really are, all the time. When I get out of a car and there are 30 fans waiting for me, I know I’m dressed the way I should be.”

New York Fashion Week has started with the city’s Mayor Bloomberg kicking off the festivities.

The prestigious event will see shows from the likes of Helmut Lang, Vena Cava, Jason Wu, Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang and Z Spoke by Zac Posen at the Lincoln Center and Bloomberg says it will be a week to remember.

He said: “The capital of fashion is right here in Manhattan.”

Victoria Beckham, Diane von Furstenberg, Herve Leger, Halston and Marc Jacobs will all show their latest collections while Calvin Klein Collection and Oscar de la Renta will round up proceedings next Wednesday (15.09.10).

As well as the usual designers, for the first time at New York Fashion Week, there will be a runway show featuring plus-size models as one of the show’s bosses, Nancy Le Winter, says the industry is finally accepting larger women want to be fashionable as well.

High-profile guests who are expected at the shows included tennis aces Serena Williams and Roger Federer, Blake Lively and US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Jane Fonda had plastic surgery because she didn’t want to look tired.

The 72-year-old actress admits she found the decision to go under the knife tough, but did it because she thought it was “for her”.

She said: “I recently had plastic surgery. It was a hard decision to make, and I decided if I’m going to do it, I’m going to tell the truth.

“I’m writing a book about aging, so I can’t write that book and not say I’ve had plastic surgery. And you know, I just decided it was for me – I don’t want to have bags under my eyes that make me look tired, and so forth and so on.”

The former fitness guru also admits she has previously been obsessed with exercise, but has changed her opinion as she has got older.

She added to television show Entertainment Tonight: “I have, in my life, been obsessive about exercise, about most everything. But one of the good things that happens when you get older in everything comes into perspective.

“I have a new hip, I have a new knee and I’m going to soon be bionic. If I don’t stay active my body stops functioning.”

Yasmin Le Bon says looking in the mirror “ruins” her day.

The model has revealed her beauty secret is to look in the mirror as little as possible to avoid over-analysing her looks, as being short-sighted makes everyone appear more attractive than they actually are.

She explained: “I try to look in the mirror as little as I can – it completely ruins my day.

“I’ve become a bit short sighted and I refuse to wear glasses because everyone looks much more beautiful this way. It would spoil the illusion.”

However, Yasmin is thrilled her daughter Amber – with Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon – is following in her footsteps as a model and she thinks the brunette beauty will go far, because she is “humble”.

She added to Vogue.co.uk: “Amber loves people and she’s humble. She’s humble enough to learn from others and that’s important in modelling. She has fun with it too.”

Speaking at shoe designer Manolo Blahnik’s party for Fashion‘s Night Out in London last night (08.09.10), Yasmin didn’t show too much bias toward her daughter however, naming Freja Beha Erichsen as her favourite model.

She said: “There aren’t many dark-haired, dark-eyed girls around so when they do come about they need to be exceptionally good, which Freja is.”

Carrie Underwood has been named as Olay Skin Care’s first-ever North American celebrity ambassador.

The country singer has signed a contract with the cosmetics firm as says it’s a dream come true because she has been using the company’s products for “at least a decade now”.

The 27-year-old beauty: “As a little girl I remember my mom always using the original Olay Beauty Fluid and encouraging my sisters and I to take care of our skin. I love that Olay has managed to change with the times, yet stay in touch with women of all ages who want affordable skin care products that do what they promise.”

Carrie will appear in both print and television adverts for Olay’s Challenge What’s Possible campaign, set to come out later this year.

As well as keep her skincare routine simple, Carrie also didn’t want any extravagance when it came to her hairdo for her recent wedding.

Carrie tied the knot with ice hockey player Mike Fisher in July and the bride was keen to have her blonde tresses put up because she didn’t want her locks ruined by the heat.

Her make-up artist Melissa Schleicher said of the nuptials at the Ritz Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro: “It was really, really hot and it was raining around 4 o’clock, just before the wedding, so I had to think of the humidity. The hair was a concern so I did kind of an updo. I just it curled it all over and just pieced it up and pinned it with bobby pins all over, real simple.”

Victoria Beckham admits she’s not the best designer in the world.

The former Spice Girl has become a well-respected member of the fashion world after launching her debut collection in 2008 and although Victoria accepts she may not be as well qualified as some of her peers, she puts all her effort into creating her clothes.

She said: “I know I’ve got a long, long way to go.

“But I don’t do anything by halves. If you’re going to do something, do it properly, I think. Otherwise there is no point in doing something at all.

“I might get a piece of fabric and tie it around me, then ask an assistant to pin it for me. I’m not claiming to be a master draper. The bottom line is: Would I wear this?”

Victoria – who has been nominated for Designer Brand of the Year by the British Fashion Council – recently revealed she will only use the “best materials” for her clothes.

She said: “I make no compromises. I use only the best materials and fiddle eternally with the cut. My true passion belongs to fashion.”

Victoria – who has three sons, Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, eight, and five-year-old Cruz with soccer star husband David – also said she’s confident with her skills as a designer but still has a lot to learn.

She said: “I want to grow as a designer, I want to learn the techniques and do more and more. I feel more confident in myself because I feel fulfilled, creatively and professionally. I’ve still got a long way to go, but I feel very happy.

“I’m in a good place in my life. And I don’t feel I have to prove myself as much as I used to have to.”

J. Alexander has applauded the work of Alexander McQueen.

The ‘America’s Next Top Model’ judge – also known as Miss J – praised the late fashion designer for his talents, adding that he loves the “theatrical” aspects of the new collections by Christian Dior and John Galliano.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “I have several favourite designers, but Alexander McQueen I thought was just fantastic. He was absolutely brilliant with a great sense of humour, which is so important – he was funny as hell! I thought he was just very talented.

“I love that Christian Dior and John Galliano is theatre theatre theatre right now, love it!”

However, the catwalk coach admitted he sympathises with McQueen – who took his own life in February – as working in the fashion industry can be a “lonely” existence.

He explained: “I think if you allow it to consume you in that kind of way it can be lonely. Some people just go in there and create a beautiful collection and once it’s done they just go to the next one. If you have a good fashion family around you it helps.

“But at the same time it can be lonely once you step out of it and you go home and you realise that you have just spent hours and hours there only to be criticised by fashion critics, who don’t know what they are talking about.”

Blake Lively and Roger Federer were Anna Wintour’s guests of honour at Fashion‘s Big Night Out last night (07.09.10).

The ‘Gossip Girl’ actress and the tennis champion were given seats next to the editor of US Vogue at the prestigious event, held in New York‘s Lincoln Center.

They were joined in the audience by the likes of Leighton Meester, Julianne Moore, Serena Williams, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Lazaro Hernandez and Carolina Herrera, who watched the models parade on the complicated in-the-round runway.

Gisele Bundchen was the first up while Naomi Campbell closed the show, during which they were accompanied by a mash-up of music including Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’ and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind (Part II)’.

Other models to take to the catwalk included Angela Lindvall, Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha, Lara Stone and Adriana Lima.

The show was divided into trends deemed by Vogue editors to be the must-haves for the autumn, among them Fifties Flare and Tartan Twist.

Vera Wang was one of the many designers to showcase their collection at the event but admitted she wasn’t entirely comfortable with what outfits were being shown.

She said: “I’m worried about tonight. These dresses are probably not what I would have picked from my collection, but tonight is not about me.”

As well as the stunning fashion show, the star-studded audience were also treated to a performance from Pharrell Williams.

Karl Lagerfeld has pulled out of Paris Fashion Week – to concentrate on a new collection instead.

The flamboyant designer – who creates ranges for luxury labels Fendi and Chanel – had been due to appear at the prestigious event on October 3 but his now cancelled the showcase so he can focus on his ready-to-wear range Masstige, which includes affordable clothing for women, but will have some pieces for men as well.

Based on the idea of “mass elitism”, the collection will be sold online when it launches for the autumn/winter 2011 season.

He told fashion bible WWD: “I wanted this for a long time. I prefer to work in another way. I can’t compete with Chanel. I don’t want to be the poor child of myself. This has been my vision for years.

“It will be something affordable for lots of people.”

Christian Stahl, a New York-based partner in Apax Partners, owner of Karl Lagerfeld SAS, supported his decision, saying: “We think there is great potential with this positioning, so we are very supportive and very excited. He is such a global personality; this is going to be a global approach.”

It also revealed negotiations are under way “for the distribution and production of the designer’s new vision”.

Earlier this year, Lagerfeld admitted he was desperate to venture into the mass market again to recreate the success of his collaboration with high street store H&M in 2004.

He said: “My dream is to turn the whole house of Lagerfeld into this kind of mass business, because I am at the peak of luxury with Chanel and Fendi. Being at both ends of the market is the height of luxury.”

Sir Philip Green insists he and Kate Moss will work together again.

It was recently announced the supermodel had ended her design collaboration with Topshop – the brand owned by British business Philip – with her final collection coming out later this year, but Philip insists the split is amicable and has plans for more collaborations in the near future.

He told Britain’s Grazia magazine: “About two or three months ago, we came to the decision that it had lost that edge, and we’d lost what our purpose was. It’s different now to when we started and probably became too overloaded.

“It wasn’t working. We all got bogged down. We were trying to produce these big collections, but it was too difficult and we needed a rethink.

“We discussed it and decided this was the way to go. It isn’t a split. There are two or three very special projects we have in mind, which we will do as and when. They have to be unique, special and they have to have her stamp on them.”

Her upcoming collection with be her 14th for the brand and in addition to designing for Topshop since 2007, she was also on hand to open up the store’s first New York outlet in 2009.

As well as being a model and designer, Kate is also the face of her own perfume range.

Erin O’Connor has created her first capsule fashion collection.

The model and stylist Kate Halfpenny have designed five typographic T-shirts and two bags for their new range She Died of Beauty and the pair are hoping it will be a success.

They said: “The very visual nature of fashion is to manipulate and exaggerate almost everything. We loved the idea of twisting a polite sentiment into a naughty yet, frivolously funny statement that we hope will appeal to all.”

All the items – which are created using ethically and organically sourced materials – have a bold and unique message and Erin and Kate say the collection’s name was a quip at the fashion industry.

They said: “It’s a teasing yet affectionate tickle at the fashion industry we continue to love, honour and serve.”

While she is busy being a designer, Erin, 32, recently revealed she has no plans to retire from the catwalk.

She said: “I hate that idea of retirement or ‘You’re past your sell-by-date.’ That is very odd, because, for me, it is about moving, showcasing and being an outrageous poser.”

Erin says she absolutely loves being in the fashion industry and finds being on the catwalk liberating.

She said: “You’d think after 15 years I would be bored, but I’m not. The catwalk is like liberation, because there is a bit of performance involved, a bit of skill thrown in, so it doesn’t matter what age you are.”

Heidi Klum is to launch her own range of activewear.

The German supermodel has teamed up with sports firm New Balance to design a collection of tunics, woven tops, leggings and outerwear and says she has been inspired by her own busy live.

Talking about the range – which will be sold on website Amazon in the UK, US, Germany and Japan – the mother-of-four told WWD: “I definitely know what it means to be on the go: four kids, school drop-offs, playdates, sports activities, the park, it goes on and on. As much as I love the gowns and sparkly clothes, what I turn to most in my closet are active clothes that look stylish but are comfortable and work for all of my activities. That is exactly what my line for New Balance is all about.”

The advertising campaign was shot by Rankin, with the help of Amazon’s clothing creative director Jan Dikkers, and Heidi was thrilled with the results.

She said: “I am all about action and so is my line for New Balance; so for our first campaign, I envisioned myself on the trampoline – a fun symbol of energy and activity.”

The collection will be available from October 7.

As well as her activewear collection, earlier this year, Heidi released two maternity ranges as she wanted expectant mothers to still be stylish.

Kesha raids the garbage for clothes.

The ‘Tik Tok’ singer admits she has an unusual way of sourcing her vintage outfits, and regularly sifts through trash to find a good item of clothing.

She said: “I like digging through thrift stores and sometimes the garbage – yes it’s true! – sometimes the garbage. It’s not like I’m going to go into the garbage with crusty food on it; all garbage is not equal. But if I see a pile of pretty sweet-looking shirts laying on the ground, yeah, I’ll dig through it.”

As well as going to any length to get a good outfit, the eccentric hitmaker also admits she wears a “shield” of glitter when she goes on stage, but has accepted it is hard to get off afterwards.

She revealed to MTV: “Right before I go onstage, I lather my body in baby oil and cover my entire body with a shield of glitter. Because it just pops! It just looks great! It’s really hard to get the glitter off. I’ve just given up. I’ve accepted that it will just be there. It’s in all my suitcases, it’s usually in my food, in my drinks.”

Diane Kruger gets boyfriend Joshua Jackson to approve her perfumes.

The stunning actress was recently named as the face of Calvin Klein’s Beauty Eau de Parfum and says she got her actor partner to give his opinion on the smell before she wore it.

She said: “I had to boyfriend-test this with Josh and he approved it.”

Diane is a huge perfume fan and says she doesn’t just stick to the usual pulse points when applying fragrances.

She said: “I spray it on my wrists, decolletage and under my armpits as I’m allergic to deodorants.”

As well as perfume, Diane likes to keep her skin hydrated and uses L’Oreal Paris’ Triple Active Day.

She said of the product: “This moisturiser is really light, but keeps my skin hydrated. I use it when I’m working.”

But one of Diane’s biggest beauty tips is to make sure she always keeps her eyebrows styled.

She told InStyle.co.uk: “Strong brows give me character. I’m loving Laura Mercier’s brow kit right now.”

Diane recently revealed how she thinks women should avoid too many skin treatments.

The blonde beauty confessed she does little to maintain her youthful complexion because excessive treatments irritate her skin.

She said: “My biggest beauty advice sounds silly, but be kind to your face.

“A lot of the things women do to their skin are crazy – facials, peels. In my experience, it’s always irritated my skin more than it’s made it clear.

“The same with my hair – I never blow dry my hair if I’m not working. Give it a break.”

Dannii Minogue has had to alter her dress sense since becoming a mother.

The Australian beauty gave birth to son Ethan Edward in July and while she and partner Kris Smith are enjoying every moment of parenthood, she now has to be careful with what she wears because the tot can quite easily ruin her clothes.

She said: “I’ve just been laughing, because mostly when I dress, I like plain colours but now I’m thinking prints are good because you will pick him up and he will vomit down the back of your shoulder, so plain clothing is quite dangerous after a feed.”

Dannii also revealed she is no hurry to lose all her baby weight as she wants to spend all her free time with Ethan and Kris.

She told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: “I have been trying to spend 24/7 with Ethan and I haven’t had the energy to do anything but just get through that. I always said I just want to focus on being a mother and when I can get back around to it, I’ll work out but I’m not going to rush into it. Going back to work is so far from my mind at the moment.

“I know my body is completely different to what it was before but I don’t care. I loved being pregnant, I loved my body changing and my belly growing – it was amazing, I had never been that confident having my picture taken. In fact, when I was pregnant, it was the most calm I’ve ever been. It’s just beautiful; you’re just in love with your body and everything going on because it’s your little baby inside.”

Manolo Blahnik makes up stories when he creates his shoes.

The footwear designer – whose creations have been worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Princess Diana – enjoys coming up with characters and tales during the creative process as it gives him inspiration.

Talking about Manolo being in the factory, his niece Kristina Blahnik said: “He sings to himself.

“I have always thought Manolo’s shoes have a lot of character; but then when I went to the factory for the first time and saw them, I realised that Manolo will actually tell a story to himself about a particular shoe when he is cutting the pattern. He will imagine who it will be worn by.”

Manolo says he gets excited by his creations and was thrilled when he collaborated with London store Liberty because it has so much history.

He told The Independent newspaper: “I just go crazy. It excites me when I do something I like.

“It was so exciting when I went through the Liberty archives. They do have England there, compressed into an archive. Some of the fabrics are almost modernistic, and it’s 19th century. One looks 1960s but it isn’t. I could faint!”

Lily Allen wants to “revolutionise” vintage shopping.

The ‘Not Fair’ singer – who is pregnant with her first child and recently announced she intends to take a five-year break from the music scene to concentrate on motherhood – is set to open her own vintage clothing store, Lucy in Disguise, later this month with half-sister Sarah Owen and wants shoppers to have a fun experience when they go.

Speaking about the store – which is based in London‘s Covent Garden, has over 1,800 pieces consumers can either buy or hire and will have a Grey Goose vodka bar to help browsing more enjoyable – Lily said: “We’re trying to revolutionise vintage shopping – it will be clean lines and easy to navigate, so you don’t have to rummage.”

Lily, 25, says she wanted to open the store with Sarah because her sibling wasn’t doing what she wanted to do with her life.

She told The Sunday Times Magazine: “Towards the end of last year I knew this year I didn’t want to be on tour so much and – to give you the history – Sarah and I haven’t always got on, but things between us started to sort themselves out and I thought, well, why don’t we do something together?

“Sarah was at a bit of a loose end – she spent all her summers in Ibiza and I felt very aware she was 30 this year and maybe that’s not what you really want to be doing in your 30s, hanging around a beach, selling sarongs, being on the door at nightclubs. She was selling herself a bit short, I thought. And we both love clothes, specifically vintage, so I said, let’s do a shop.”

Zoe Saldana believes fashion is an “art form”.

The ‘Avatar’ actress – who once launched a clothing line with her sisters and has a fashion database website myfdb.com with her fiance Keith Britton – loves taking time to put an outfit together as she knows it’s important to get the right look.

She said: “Five years ago my sisters and I created our own brand, called Arasmaci, but we actually produced no more than a few T-shirts and some accessories because I became overwhelmed by ‘Avatar’.

“For many people, including a lot of actresses, fashion is all about brand names, logos, status symbols, but for me, it’s an art form.”

Zoe also revealed how she accepts part of her job is to look good but she would never wear anything that made her look “cheap”.

She told Britain’s Hello! magazine: “My body is my office, you might say. Half the job of someone in showbusiness is creating an attractive image. And for me, that doesn’t mean becoming a cheap sex symbol.”

Zoe recently admitted she finds a “privilege” to be a role model for women.

She explained: “I guess I’m a role model now, and that is a privilege. I think women were fighting because we wanted to be feminine. Then we had to be masculine. Now we just want to be us.”

Kate Moss has an “innate sense of herself”.

According to her friend, fashion photographer Rankin, the British model is “the best” at what she does, and he believes there will never be another beauty like her.

He said: “She is best of the best. There is no one like Kate and I don’t think there ever will be again.

“She’s exciting, wiley, sarcastic and beautiful. It’s weird photographing her as she has such an innate sense of herself. She knows exactly how to work a camera.”

However, despite his love for Kate, Rankin – who has photographed celebrities including Britney Spears, Madonna and Cate Blanchett during his career – thinks everyone is photogenic in some way.

He told vogue.com: “Everyone has something about them that makes them photogenic.

“If I can’t take a good picture of someone then I’m a s**t photographer. People come alive when they’re not scared of the camera. Take photos of yourself and you’ll soon get a feel of what you feel comfortable doing.”
