At 15, I found the New York Studio School of Painting and Sculpture, where I was accepted for study the following year. At the time I did not know that the building—located on Eighth Street in the village—was the former home of the Whitney art collection, really the Whitney Studio Club where Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptress and supporter of the arts, showed contemporary works.
