Kate Middleton Engagement Ring Was Princess Diana’s 14-Diamond Ring
by Brian Willett
The unveiling of Kate Middleton’s engagement ring has brought with it a lot of excitement – not just because it means that Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to be married, but because the ring belonged to Princess Diana. However, it is now Kate Middleton’s engagement ring, though Prince William gave a tribute to his mother when explaining the move to press.
“It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me,” Prince William said. “Kate’s now very special to me, so it was only right to put the two together.”
Kate Middleton’s engagement ring carried an original price tag of $65,000 when purchased in 1981 from Garrard Jewelers, which has been the official jeweler of the royal family since 1843…not a bad gig.
The ring has an 18 carat sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds, all set on a gold band.
