What appeared to be another Twitter hoax, had users search the web to find the truth if Teena Marie is dead and as much as we do want to say that this was just another Twitter hoax we are sad to say that the news are real and that the Grammy Nominated singer Teena Marie has passed away this evening. According to CNN Marie was found dead by her daughter after apparently dying in her sleep, manager Mike Gardner said.

Known best for her hit song “Lovegirl” Teena Marie is an American Grammy Award-nominated singer–songwriter–producer. Marie, nicknamed Lady Tee, (sometimes spelled Lady T), is a protegée of late funk legend Rick James, and is notable as one of the few successful white performers of R&B. She plays rhythm guitar, keyboards and congas. She also has written, produced, sung and arranged virtually all of her songs since her 1980 release Irons in the Fire. She has said this is her favorite album. She has a daughter named Alia Rose who, as of 2009, sings under the name Rose Le Beau.

“Teena was a black voice trapped in a white body,” said Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, a broadcasting company that targets African-American and urban listeners. “I would always tell her that she was one of the greatest vocalists of our time.”
