Watch The Throne, Jay-Z and Kanye West Collaboration, Due Next Week
by Charlie Nathanson
On New Year’s Eve, Jay-Z, along with his wife Beyonce Knowles and business partner Kanye West, co-headlined the opening ceremonies for The Cosmopolitan, a premier resort in Las Vegas. Also in attendance was Coldplay, who shared the stage with the rap artists. Jay-Z, Kanye, Beyonce and Coldplay’s frontman, Chris Martin, were present throughout all sets played, lending a voice on intermittent songs. The list of musical guests present at this ceremony is extensive – John Mayer hopped on stage for some songs as well. Quite the opening ceremony if you ask me; The Cosmopolitan obviously began its career in Vegas with a bang.
Amidst bottles and bottles of champagne, Jay-Z announced that his collaborative album with Kanye West, titled Watch The Throne, will be released next week. For any hardcore rap fans, this album is obviously a must buy. It’s almost the equivalent of U2 and The Rolling Stones collaborating on an album…almost. This is not the first time that Jay-Z and Kanye have collaborated, and unless this album does not sell well (which is pretty unlikely), it will most likely not be the last.
Jay-Z and Kanye’s work together goes as far back as Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint (download here), which was released in 2001 and was one of the factors that led to Kanye’s fame and fortune. The two have had a successful business relationship, helping one another produce albums and backing each other on political and philanthropy matters (i.e. supporting one another’s statements). Given Jay-Z and Kanye’s track records with one another, I think it’s safe to say that Watch The Throne will explode (in the good sense) and possibly be one of the best rap albums of the year. I know, I know, it’s only January…you can’t possibly say that. But, c’mon, it’s Jay-Z and Kanye! It can’t get too much better than that.
The verification of the album’s release is disputed, however, as the announcement was made on New Year’s Eve. What I mean is that the parties involved were under the influence of certain substances, so it is entirely possible that they made such a statement without really thinking. While this is a valid concern, I feel like Jay-Z and Kanye are well-versed enough in the business and production sides of music that they would not make such a promise without fulfilling it. It would not be the end of the world if the album comes out in a few weeks rather than one, but it would not look good for either party if such an event were to occur. Not the end of the world by any means, though – I do not mean to dramatize.
So be sure to check out Watch The Throne. I’d give you a release date to be on the lookout for, but that’s up in the air at this point. Hopefully Jay-Z and Kanye live up to their word, but this was not an official statement, so many things are possible. In addition, anonymous sources have claimed Watch The Throne won’t hit until March 1, but those aren’t always reliable.
