Weekly Feature: Virginia Slaghekke by Richard Stow
by Samantha Kate Jourdan
This week we have chosen Richard Stow to be the main fashion photography feature. Looking through his portfolio, he makes us remember what true passion for your work is all about. We first came across Richard when our friends at Schön! magazine introduced us to him, and it turns out his studio was just around the corner from our London base. Richard is at the top of our ‘One to Watch List’.
Graduating from The London College of Fashion Richard gained experience and his expertise assisting fashion and beauty photographers such as Nick Knight and Rankin, since then Richard’s work has seen and has taken in all aspects of the fashion and beauty industry for over a decade. His work can be seen in international publications such as Oyster, Vogue, Schön!, Harper’s Bazaar and 125 and now regularly collaborates on projects with clients such as Nicholas Kirkwood, Esprit, Warner music, Warehouse, Sony & Religion.
For this shoot Richard Stow told us he had planned a bit of a post apocalyptic Mad Max-type edge! A tough warrior woman character, fending for herself in the wilderness… The locations were shot when he was trekking in the Himalayas, in the Annapurna region just along the edge of the Tibetan plateau. There he shot hundreds of landscapes and waited for the right idea to come along in a creative context. When talking ideas with his stylist, they came up with a fashion story which incorporated the landscapes as backdrops by use of multiple exposure. So the backdrops did their thing, Virgina did her thing, and…Viola, we get this wondrous fusion of mother nature and her wild inspiration on fashion, pretty cool.
