Ylonka Verheul, Bringing Hats Back.
by Alice Byrne
For the August issue of Flair Magazine, model Ylonka Verheul adopts a series of alternative and trans-formative looks in front of the camera, photographed Emilio Tini, and wonderfully styled by Elena Bellini, in designs from labels including Max Mara, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton. There are lots of hats involved here, which I love. Hats seem to be everywhere at the moment, and I think this is a good thing, Ylonka actually sports a killer hat in every single one of these photographs.
The outfits are very chic and classic, lots of flattering cuts and tailoring. In some ways, the fashion choices are fairly practical, but the inclusion of the hats give the editorial a more glamorous feel. I think the styling here is perfect, Ylonka almost looks like a different person in every image. I think there is a perfect combination of black and white and color photography here, I think some images need the color to create the atmosphere, whereas others are more effective with the simplicity of black and white.
Two images really stand out to me. One has got to be the smokey black and white photograph. The movement here is perfect, and I think Ylonka looks seriously beautiful. In stark contrast, the all orange photograph (hat, lips, dress) is super-hot.
