Thylane Blondeau, 10 Years Old in Vogue Paris

by Alice Byrne

As you may well have seen, there is a 10 year old girl gracing the pages of Vogue Paris in various fashion editorials. This has caused a fair bit of controversy, which I think is totally understandable. It is not like these photographs are of a little girl modeling cute children’s wear in a park or on holiday, these images are fairly sexualized and see little Thylane Blondeau applying lipstick and lounging around in a provocative manner. Thylane has also graced the cover of Vogue Enfrants, in a photograph that is largely more appropriate and suitable modeling job for a 10 year old.

These images of the 10 year old Thylane have brought on condemnation from parent’s groups and MP’s worldwide. The images are of course raising questions about the sexualization of children in advertising and media, and while there is no denying that the photographs are very beautiful, Vogue Paris must have realized that publishing these shots of Thylane were going to cause a stir.

Despite her age, Thylane already has an impressive modeling career, having walked for Jean Paul Gaultier at age four, and already having several high profile magazine spreads to her name. Thylane’s piercing eyes, gorgeous bone structure and pouting lips are obviously the making of a wonderful model, but many would argue that she should be out playing with her friends, or at least doing suitable children’s modelling, not being dressed up in Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and Valentino among others.
