SS2012 Beauty Trends – Bold Statement Lips

Bold lips were all over the runway this season. From bright oranges to blue to brown, statements were made all over without saying a word.

Jason Wu SS2012 Runway

I am deeming this season’s Fashion Week’s the Fashion Weeks of the bold lip! There were so many crazy, zany, edgy and beautiful lips coming down the runway this seasons it is hard to tell which was the craziest.

Richard Chai SS2012 Runway

Richard Chai, Betsey Johnson, Thierry Mugler all had seriously strong lips and Jason Wu knocked it out of the park with his color blocked lip.

For Wu, makeup artist Diane Kendal kept the face natural and lightly dewy while giving a nice strong brow and a slam -not a pop- of color on the lips. Mary Katrantzou had the same natural face but used an almost neon colored blue lip where Prabal Gurung‘s artist Charlotte Tilbury used five different lipstick colors per model.

Prabal Gurung SS2012 Runway

Tilbury wanted an “orchid effect for the lips—a flower coming out of her mouth for the Prabal Gurung. When applying, start with a black in the deep dark back of the inner lip.” She and her artists used five lipsticks to achieve the full effect of this look.  Starting by using MAC Pro Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil, slightly feathered out to give a just kissed look.  Tilbury then used MAC black eyeliner around the opening of the lips, then a dark purple, magenta and ending with a bright pink which took up the majority of the lip.

Donna Karan went bold with a  brown lip for Spring, something that most designers would not do.  Tilbury was also the key for this show, using MAC’s Bittersweet Pro Longwear Lip Pencil followed by MAC’s Full Chocolate and Most Mocha lipsticks

So, remember it is OK to go bold.  Just make sure you do it with either your lip or your eye, not both.  A beautiful natural looking face, a light eye and a bold lip make an amazing statement.
