Joseph Altuzarra Finally Takes Home the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Award

by Alexander Patino

Joseph Altuzarra was the big winner at last night’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards at Skylight Soho in New York City. Altuzarra, who was nominated last year and had been nominated for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2010 and 2011, finally took home the gold (well, the Rachel Feinstein Currin trophy is actually made of bronze, go figure), along with $300,000 towards building his fashion label. The two runners-up of the night were NYC-based jewelry designer Pamela Love and the fashion darling newcomers from Chicago, Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind. The two other finalists were each granted $100,000 for growing their business and all three recipients will be given mentorships with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund ‘s Business Advisory Committee.

Last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Vogue announced the recipients of the eighth annual awards from the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF).

As could be expected from such a fete, the crowd pedigree was top-tier, with designers, industry insiders, models and the young Hollywood starlets all making the rounds, schmoozing between drinks and the chicken pot-pie main course (nice touch CVFF). Notable designers in attendance included the Colombian visionary designer Haider Ackermann, Margherita Missoni, Thom Browne, Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, Thakoon Panichgul, Prabal Gurung, Tory Burch, Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Patrik Ervell and Narciso Rodriguez – and that’s just some of them. The runway veterans included Joan Smalls, Jessica Stam, Coco Rocha and Liya Kebede, with Chloe Moretz, Mia Wasikowska and Rooney Mara (the night’s honorary presenter) rounding out the celluloid sirens sector.

The awards committee consisted of Vogue’s Mark Holgate, Reed Krakoff, Nordstrom’s Jeffrey Kalinsky, Andrew Rosen, Jenna Lyons, Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg and Anna Wintour (who it must be noted, attended the ceremony in Marni – specifically, the same Marni outfit she wore to the photo op for the International Vogue Editors for Tokyo’s Fashion’s Night Out. What’s that about?)
