Shalom Harlow terrified for catwalk return

Shalom Harlow was terrified she would fall when she returned to the runway for Alexander Wang.

The model was one of a number of big names who walked the designer’s Fall/Winter 12 runway. It was the first time she’d been on a catwalk for four years and she was terrified it would go wrong.

“This idea of returning to the catwalk is — I do feel some nerves, and I do feel the height of those shoes. ‘I hope I don’t slip,’ was the next thought,” she laughed in a video series Wang has created called Confessional.

Harlow also spoke about her entry into the fashion world, which happened as soon as she finished high school. It was a huge change for the now 38-year-old star.

“I was scouted at a Cure concert. A model scout approached me there and asked me if I modeled, and I thought that was ludicrous. When I started coming to do shows in New York, New York had a pretty electric energy then. It was the early-‘90s, and there was a lot of really fun theatrical types that were designing, and so the runway kind of became this stage for all of these mega model personalities to flaunt their stuff,” she said.

At the time Harlow was walking the catwalk for huge designers and alongside other big names. She used to cheer on her peers, although sometimes she wanted to better them too.

“I had no relationship to the fashion world whatsoever. I had never seen a fashion magazine. I had no reference point for anything. I was suddenly in Paris on catwalks for designers I could barely pronounce their names,” she said.

“Sometimes it would be about one-upping each other on the runway.”
