Iris Apfel: Namesake shoe is hideous

Iris Apfel says it’s important to remember your knees will be too “wobbly” to wear miniskirts at 80.

The 90-year-old fashion icon inspired a design by Jimmy Choo. The sandal boasts a towering heel and is tan, with a raffia type strap and rectangles of green and yellow plastic-like material covering it.

Iris is honored the footwear was created, but she won’t be wearing it.

“I think it’s a hideous shoe. It has everything but the kitchen sink in it,” she laughed. “I couldn’t wear it if I wanted to. It’s got a five inch skinny heel. The only way I could even try it on is if a handsome young orthopedic surgeon was holding my hand.”

Iris’ collection of clothes is legendary and has even inspired an exhibition in New York City. Now she’s getting older she still loves style, but thinks carefully about what she can and can’t pull off.

“I don’t know that there is any secret to staying stylish as you get older,” she told British magazine Grazia.

“Just know that you will age. When you are 80, your knees will be a bit wobbly and you probably shouldn’t wear a miniskirt. But have fun. It is such a shame that all these young girls have beautiful figures, but they don’t know how to wear clothes, how to put themselves together. It’s so forced, I find it sad. Getting dressed up should be joyful.”
