Francisco Costa dreams of seeing Calvin Klein’s clothing on royalty

The Brazilian-born designer is approaching his ten year anniversary at the helm of Calvin Klein. During this time he has won the CFDA designer of the year award twice. However, Francisco’s debut design attempts received a much less favorable reception.

“I was about 12 and I was invited to go to a horse show with my cousins and I designed myself a suit to wear,” Francisco told the British edition of InStyle magazine. “It was a burgundy gabardine safari suit. My cousins were shocked! I remember they looked at me like I was a freak!”

Francisco stepped into Calvin Klein’s shoes as creative director of the label in 2003. He was appointed to the prestigious role after working with big name designers including Tom Ford at Gucci. He has since gone on to dress Hollywood A-list stars.

Francisco has discussed who he enjoyed seeing in his pieces the most, as well as which leading lady he would like to dress in the future.

“We dress so many and they’re so diverse. But Gwyneth Paltrow looked amazing in the gold dress we did for her at the 2011 Oscars,” he said. “I’d love to dress Kate Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge! She’d look amazing in Calvin…”
