New Sounds: Carmen Villain

London-based Carmen Villain released her tempestuous debut album, Sleeper, last week on Smalltown Supersound. Throughout the record, dreamlike vocals singing of escaping an unsatisfying world are plastered over loose, abrasive instrumental tracks on which Carmen plays guitar, bass, drum machines, keyboards and percussion. One can hear Carmen’s interest in sprawling, taboo-busting lo-fi rock, including Sun City Girls, This Heat, Royal Trux, Broadcast, Bikini Kill and The Stooges, plus the cut ‘n’paste productions of J Dilla and Wu-Tang Clan seeping in throughout the record.
